Wilpattu is Sri Lanka's largest and oldest national park, named for the villus — natural sand-rimmed lakes — scattered through its dense dry forest. It has leopards, sloth bears and elephants, and a fraction of Yala's traffic. Sightings take longer here, and feel earned when they come.
The forest is thicker than Yala's, so game viewing is slower and more patient. The reward is the atmosphere: long tracks with no other vehicle in sight, and villus that fill after rain and draw everything to them.
Sloth bears are a particular draw in June and July when the palu trees fruit. Leopards are present in good numbers and are increasingly seen as the population has recovered since the park fully reopened in 2010.
Wilpattu is about an hour from Anuradhapura and three hours from Negombo, which makes it the natural wildlife stop for anyone travelling the western side of the island or heading north.
The park closes or becomes difficult during the north-east monsoon, roughly late October to January, when tracks flood.
