The Jaffna peninsula is flat, bright and culturally Tamil, with its own food, festivals and architecture, and a landscape of palmyra palms, lagoons and islands. Long closed by the civil war, it is now easily reached by road or by a comfortable day train from Colombo, and it feels like a different country to the south.
Nallur Kandaswamy Kovil is the peninsula's centre of gravity — a large, active Hindu temple with daily pujas and a spectacular 25-day festival in July and August. Men remove shirts to enter; everyone removes shoes.
The Dutch fort on the lagoon, the public library rebuilt after its destruction in 1981, and the markets of the old town give Jaffna its texture. The library in particular carries a weight of recent history that is worth understanding before you visit.
Jaffna food is distinct from the south: more chilli, more tamarind, crab curry, odiyal kool, and palmyra products from jaggery to toddy. It is one of the best reasons to make the trip.
Beyond the town, causeways run out to the islands — Kayts, Karainagar and, at the end of a long road and a short ferry, Delft with its wild ponies and coral-block walls. Nagadeepa's Buddhist temple and Nainativu's Hindu shrine sit on the same small island and are visited together.
