Negombo exists on most itineraries as a first or last night, and it does that job unusually well. The airport is a 20–30 minute drive away, the beach is wide and walkable, and the fishing harbour and Dutch-era canal give the town more character than a transit stop deserves.
Arrive on a long-haul flight and the last thing you want is four hours in a car. Negombo lets you sleep, swim and eat within half an hour of landing, then start the real trip the next morning.
The town itself is strongly Catholic — a legacy of Portuguese rule — with churches at the centre of village life and a fishing fleet that comes in at dawn. The Lellama fish market is genuinely worth the early start, and the lagoon behind the town is best seen from a small boat at first light.
The Dutch canal that runs north from the lagoon was cut in the seventeenth century to move cinnamon to Colombo. Parts are now a quiet paddling and cycling route through coconut plantations and villages.
Negombo is also the traditional starting point for a self-drive tuk-tuk trip, and a cluster of Ayurveda and wellness resorts sits along this stretch of coast.
