Sigiriya rock at opening time

Sigiriya is the image most people carry of Sri Lanka before they arrive, and it survives the expectation. King Kassapa built a fortified palace on the summit of a granite monolith in the fifth century, surrounded by symmetrical water gardens that still fill in the rains. Climb it early, before the heat and the queues.
The ascent is around 1,200 steps through the lion's paws, past the mirror wall and a sheltered gallery of frescoes, onto a summit plateau of brick foundations, bathing pools and very large views. It takes most people two to three hours in total.
Start at 7am when the gates open. By 9am the metal stairways are hot and crowded, and by midday the exposed rock is punishing. The alternative is the late afternoon slot, which is cooler but means descending close to dusk.
Across the road, Pidurangala rock is a rougher, cheaper, scramble-at-the-top climb that looks straight at Sigiriya. Many travellers now do Pidurangala at sunrise and Sigiriya itself later, or on the following morning.
Sigiriya village is the most practical base for the whole Cultural Triangle: Dambulla is 30 minutes away, Polonnaruwa a little over an hour, and Minneriya and Kaudulla national parks are on the doorstep for the dry-season elephant gathering.
