Yala's Block 1 has the highest recorded density of leopards in the world, along with sloth bears, elephants, crocodiles and a coastline of lagoons and dunes. It is also the most visited park in the country, so the experience depends heavily on going at the right time with the right driver.
Drives leave at 5.30am and again mid-afternoon, and last four to five hours. Mornings are better for cats and for light; afternoons are quieter for jeep numbers. A full-day permit avoids the gate rush entirely.
Block 1 is where the leopard density is highest and where the jeeps concentrate. Block 5 and the adjoining Lunugamvehera park are far less busy and worth asking about if you would rather have space than certainty.
Yala's Block 1 usually closes for around six weeks from the start of September for maintenance and drought relief. Always confirm current dates before building a trip around it — the closure moves.
Tissamaharama is the practical base, with everything from guesthouses to the tented and villa-style camps on the park boundary. A stay inside or on the edge of the park buys you first position at the gate.
