Ella is a one-street hill town that happens to sit at the head of a spectacular gap in the escarpment, with views that run all the way to the southern plains on a clear morning. It is the hill country's social centre — hikes, waterfalls, the Nine Arch Bridge and more banana-pancake cafés than the population justifies.
The two classic walks leave from the village. Little Adam's Peak is an easy 45-minute climb for sunrise. Ella Rock is a harder two to three hours each way along the railway line and up through tea and eucalyptus, and is genuinely easy to get lost on without a guide or a downloaded track.
The Nine Arch Bridge, built in stone and brick without steel during the First World War, curves through the jungle below Ella. Check the train times locally and be on the bridge or the viewpoint for a crossing — it is the difference between a nice bridge and a memorable one.
Ella sits in the Uva rain shadow, which gives it a different season to most of the hill country: it is often bright and clear in July and August while the western slopes are wet, and wettest from October into December.
The town has become busy, and that is worth knowing in advance. Stay a few hundred metres outside the centre, start early, and it is still one of the most enjoyable places on the island.
